15 Freezer Life Hacks

Some surprising, weird and unusual things you can do with your freezer apart from  freeze food, preserve milk, butter leftover meals etc

1. Revive Computer Hard Drive

Your computer crashed and your worst fear is that all data is los? or is it ? You can recover lost data from a crashed computer :

Remove the hard drive and place it in a plastic bag or ziplock bag for between 3 to 5 hours.

Take it out of the freezer and put it back in the computer. Your data should be intact

2. Open a sealed Envelope

Place the sealed envelope in a ziplock bag and put it in the freezer for about 1 to 2 hours ,take out and open envelope without tearing it and when it reaches room temperature remoisten and seal it back. When you reseal it it will look like it was never opened

3. Kill Dust Mites

the best way to get rid of dust mites is to subject them to freezing temperatures:

Place your beddings-sheets, pillowcases, duvets etc. inside a bag and place the bag in the freezer for 24 hours. Remove and wash in washer as usual

4. Prolong Battery Life

This only applies to NiMH and NiCd  batteries only!

Place the batteries in an airtight container and put the container in the freezer.

Take out when you need them but make sure they are completely thawed or defrosted before using them. Also make sure they do not come into contact with any food in the freezer

5. Store Planting Seeds

If you want to preserve planting seeds that are suitable for cold climates then place them in an airtight container and put the container in the freezer. Take out when you are ready to plant the seeds

 

6. Extend Candle Burning Time

If you want your candles to burn for longer then place them in the freezer and take out when you need them. No need to thaw out just light them from frozen

7. Dry-clean Jeans

Why not dry clean your favourite pair of jeans with a brilliant idea:

Put your jeans in a very large zip lock bag and place it in the freezer for a week. When you take it out it will smell fresh and clean because the cold temperature of the freezer kills all bacteria and removes any odours caused by the bacteria

8. Extent Life of Pantyhose

If you want to extend the life of your stockings then here is a brilliant tip:

Wet the new stockings and squeeze out the water. Place the stockings in a plastic bag and freeze it overnight. Remove and thaw at room temperature. The extreme temperature will make the fabric bond together, making it less prone to runs and make it last longer

9. Keep Lipstick Fresh

You can keep your lipstick as fresh as the day you bought it:

Store your favourite or occasional lipstick in the freezer, that way it stays as nice and fresh for as long as possible

10. Freshen Shoes

Put your shoes in a large zip lock bag and place it in the freezer for a week. When you take it out it will smell fresh and clean because the cold temperature of the freezer kills all bacteria and removes any odours caused by the bacteria

11. Prevent Sweater Shredding

You can prevent your new sweater from shedding:

Roll up the sweater and place it a sealable bag and put the bag in the freezer overnight. The cold temperature will make the fibres tighter and prevent them from shredding.

12. Remove Gum From Shoes

Stick a piece of paper on the gum and place the shoe in a bag. Place the bag in the freezer for 1 to 2 hours. Remove the shoe and the paper and gum should come off together.  

13. Bug Killer

If you buy and antique or wooden item and are worried about woodworm in the wood-simply place the item in the freezer for a few weeks. The extreme cold will kill any woodworm

 

 

14. Cling Film Unwrap

Cling film or plastic wrap almost always sticks to itself and makes it difficult to unwrap – a good solution to this problem is to:

Place the plastic wrap in the freezer for a few minutes (very important! no longer than that) This will make it easier to unwind the cling film or plastic wrap,

15. Shoe Expander

Here is a neat little solution to expand shoes that are too tight for you:

Fill a sealable plastic bag with water, seal tightly, place it in the shoe and put the shoe in the freezer overnight. The frozen water should have hopefully expanded the shoe,if not. Repeat process  if needed.
